Within the dynamic cultural dialog of transnational dance, American Hip Hop music/dance has influenced all popular music around the globe. With each year, more and more brilliant compositions from artists in Near Eastern and North African countries remix our own American hip hop traditions to new heights and possibilities. In this workshop, Donna Mejia details the emerging dance traditions of this dynamic movement and subculture. After a vigorous warm up, dancers will receive a variety of stationary and moving progressions that are intended to give heavy emphasis to the powerful downbeat accents found in hip hop. For the beginner and advanced student alike, Top Shelf Tribal will get you started with basic torso isolations, paying particular attention to muscle movement, posture, and intention. From there we combine the isolations to create specific shapes and eventually build fluid and slinky combinations using the core muscles. Next we will explore how to create a signature look with your arms and using them to tell your story. We will focus on using the entire arm from shoulders to fingertips to convey power, strength, and mood through how the arms and hands are held and maneuvered. In this workshop, Rasha will show us how to edit music with precision and create a seamless track of music using Audacity. The first half of class will include a detailed demonstration of basic music editing functions, including tempo changes, fades, splices, and track overlays. In the second portion of class, you’ll have an opportunity to apply these techniques and produce your own edited piece of music worthy of the stage. This workshop re-visions the practice of fixed feet and unmoving isolations to an exploration of dynamic traveling progressions. Donna Mejia will present a stimulating class involving strong cardio/pulmonary engagement, firestorm drills, short moving combinations across the floor, and bi-directional/asymmetrical use of the limbs. Donna’s practice sessions offer a globetrotting transnational dance experience, referencing movements from India, West/North/East Africa, China, Latin America, and Donna’s own roots in America’s Creole South. This workshop may be best suited for dancers with at least 2 consistent years of experience in Near Eastern dance. However, adjustments and accommodations will be plentiful for participants with less experience. Any true art form is as much mental and spiritual as it is physical. In this interactive workshop, students will use naturally-occurring trance states to enhance creativity, remember choreography, connect with the rhythm of the music, dance with the whole body, and shine with charisma and confidence. Students will learn self-hypnosis techniques for banishing stage fright, enjoying practice, and employing mental rehearsal, which studies have shown to be essentially as effective as physical rehearsal. Holding moments of tension or stillness is a powerful performance device that can help the dancer more subtly express her intentions, and nuances in the music. It is important to think about the notes but, what about the spaces in between? We think about our movements, trying to make them complex and difficult, but what about the power of stillness, or a simple line to contrast our intricate torso-work? This class will focus on subtle yet surprising accents, dramatic pauses and pacing. Olivia of Zafira explores the melodic rhythm Ciftitelli offers many opportunities for the dancer. This 8/4 rhythm is spacious in the first half and staccato in the second. This allows the dancer to express the notes with sharp, quick locks and hits, and the rests with juicy, dreamy sweeps and holds. This workshop will explore different versions of cifti and then construct a series of combinations that fit this versatile rhythm. These combinations can be strung together for a short choreography or they can be used in parts to explore this rhythm on stage and around the campfire! . All Levels – 47 Students Max –2 hours

This class is designed for the dedicated Bellydance student, and is suggested for dancers with several years of experience in Tribal Bellydance and/or Suhaila Salimpour’s technique. Here we will cover more advanced topics such as precise multi-layered movement, footwork, turning technique, floor work and preparation for backbends. Beginning and ending with a Yoga warm up and cool down, we will stretch and prepare the body, and each student will be encouraged and assisted in creating their own strengthening and conditioning routine to take home and practice each day, in order to help them meet their personal goals as a dancer. A foundation practice should do more than increase circulation and soften muscles. An effective practice has the power to prime the nervous system for quantum leaps forward in training, attune muscular intelligence, reveal unconscious default movement habits and expand the range of motion in joints. Donna Mejia’s workshop details the logic and unfolding of an effective warm up well beyond the basics of token stretches and mild cardio training. Donna will address optimal alignment, joint pliability, breathing techniques, categories of muscular engagement, and safety zones for working sensibly. The information presented can be customized for many levels of ability and experience, including rehabilitation and recovery phases. In this workshop we will explore what the creative process can do for you: every bad experience, every painful memory stored, can be expressed in a creative form and set the soul free from its grasp. We will see how to find the creative spark, how to ignite the creative fire and how to feed it until you are fulfilled. We will also combine this creativity discovery journey with the exploration of how we store emotional or mental issues in our muscles. In this workshop, you will learn the proper hand/finger techniques to produce clean beautiful sounds from your doumbek. You will learn how to play several traditional Middle Eastern rhythms as well as how to switch between them. This workshop is perfect for beginners or experienced drummers who want to brush up or clean up their technique. This workshop is also fantastic for dancers who want to educate themselves about the basic rhythms. 30 Students Max – Stage - 90 minutes

From the basics of balancing a sword on your head to some of the more interesting shapes and intricate ideas that can come from good swordplay, Blue Lotus Tribe covers quite a bit of ground in a small amount of time in this workshop. Learn how easy it can be to incorporate swords into basic tribal improv vocabulary and common combinations and work your way up to Blue Lotus Tribe original combinations and transitions for improv as well as some very dramatic partner work. All participants should bring their own sword and floor work will be covered, so knee pads are recommended. All Levels – 35 Students Max – 2 hours

Sometimes called the Jimi Hendrix of zill playing, Z-Helene is known for her tour-de-force zill solos. In this workshop, she will utilize zill drills, breathing exercises, and emotional-releasing techniques to help facilitate your ability to perform spontaneous a cappella zill solos. It's just you, your body, your zills and your little 'ole imagination all working together to conjure up a uniquely entertaining and deeply personal dance expression. Drama, presentation and technique are addressed in this workshop. First, we will build several tribal fusion combinations that incorporate elements of: Tango, Hora, Russian Gypsy and Bellydance torso articulation, while emphasizing technique and alignment. Then, we will use these combos to experiment with timing, emotion, and gesture nuances to bring these combinations to life. All Levels – 50 Students Max –2 hours

Don't worry, you won't have to hide these in your napkin or try to feed them to your dog! This class will have you finishing your veggies (but not losing them) in no time with THB's system of cueing 1, 2, 3, of 4 fast spins (Spinage Salad, Spinage Pie, Spinage Dip, and Creamed Spinage) in group improvisation with arm variations to give your spins poise, geometry, and synchronization. Also included on the menu is our "Turkey Sandwich w/Cheese combination, which utilizes turns and spins as well as THB's other signature elements of light and fluffy mixed with dark and creepy. In this workshop, you will learn techniques and new hits to use on your doumbek. These are the rock star tricks! Learn how to incorporate these hits into rhythms and solos to really spice up your playing. Then we will venture into the realm of drum solos. The drum solo is the climax of any belly dancer show. This is a great time for the dancer and drummer to improvise and communicate. In this workshop, you will learn how to build your own solos and improvising techniques. You will also learn what the dancer is expecting from you and how to play something interesting and exciting for them. This workshop is perfect for drummers who know the basics. In this workshop, we will explore the delicate interplay between 2 opposing forces—balancing slow, sinewy, serpentine, fluid transitions and movements, with quick, sharp, crisp, isolated hits and accents to give any combination ‘punch’ and create more dynamic dancing and performance. In the game of fusion, the seed of an idea can be planted from the study of one dance form and bloom into a unique entity once transferred through the body of a bellydancer. This class is inspired by my studies of both somatic therapeutics and of Ankoku Butoh (Japanese for black-black dance)- Using story and character building techniques, as well as breathing, visualization and confrontation of basic fears, we will dive in to our creative bodies in order to access... the unusual. The focus in this class is to learn to let go of our ideas of who we believe we are, artistically or otherwise, and to become more comfortable with what it feel like to be a conduit and a channel. This can help alleviate stage fright, creative blocks, and fear related to dance. Please bring a yoga mat, comfy clothes, and an open mind.

The dance community has long asserted that ‘bellydance’ has historical associations with birth rituals, goddess traditions and sexual rites. In 2010/2011 Donna Mejia researched these connections at Smith College under the guidance of a prominent ethnomusicologist to confirm what is known versus unknown about our Eastern dance and music history. Donna will summarize her findings after reaching back into the Neolithic period (4,000-8,000 B.C.E.) to review evidence found in historical texts, architectural reliefs, epigraphs, sixth-century poetry, and archaeological findings. Donna approaches the topic, and its controversies, through the lenses of cultural-sociological, post-colonial and feminist theories. She presents a full analysis of present factors inhibiting study, and elucidates the ways in which women, power, and dance have been suppressed, exploited, mythologized, and enshrined in dance history. We will focus on developing actual “power points” in performance through entrances/exits, employing different techniques/ exercises to expand your spatial usage of the stage and cultivating true “presence” on stage. Drishti's favorite way to dance is Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS) with frequent lead changes, so we have created some graceful and dynamic combos that let us switch leads in fun and interesting ways. We especially enjoy moves that let us transition through different formations, like criss-crossing each other as we switch positions, or twirling like the teacup ride at Disneyland! The intention of this semi-private workshop is to provide a container for integration of material and direct application to both your dance creations and your daily practice. In the first part of this workshop, we will focus on some dancing, combinations, and the process of creation. Deb will also share some ideas and exercises she uses frequently to free creative blocks and alter her combinations to empower you to feature more of your own personal style. We will use the second part of this workshop as an opportunity to dig deep, re-commit to your dance goals, and jumpstart the New Year and your personal practice for 2012, with goal setting, self-inquiry, and supported coaching for how to make lasting changes over time. Deb will offer tools from her professional experience as a holistic health coach to assist this section of the class.
